Driving Question:
How can we make a piece of abandoned land in our school premises more useful for students and other visitors?
Project Summary:
In the project, students identified and studied a barren piece of land in the school premises, and underwent inquiry and practical application of making this land useful for the school community. After the site visit, they cleared the land, grew seasonal vegetables (coriander, corn, spinach, mint, etc.) and redesigned it as a mini garden for students and other visitors.
Key Knowledge and Understanding (Curriculum Standards):
Geography:
- Inquire the relationship between physical and human geography.
- Describe earth’s processes and patterns and how landscapes have changed overtime.
- Inquire about why landforms are changing due to human activity.
English:
- Using planning, drafting and editing strategies to present their work/ creative writing. (Story writing)
- Writing for a purpose. (Descriptive writing)
- The following topics will be covered:
- Chapter 1: Introducing Geography
- Chapter 2: Our Home; The Earth
- Chapter 4: The Earth’s landform
Arts:
- Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- Evaluate and analyze, creative works using the language of art, craft and design
Entry Event:
- 1: Site visit of the school to identify areas that are not being used effectively and create a plan to use them effectively
- 2: Visit of the Department of Geology in the University of Karachi where a geologist briefed them about the Earth, its resources and its importance.
Major Products:
Individual:
- Research on human activities on Earth
- Short story about the impact of human activities on Earth
- Descriptive essay about the worksite
Team:
- Role-play
- Presentation of the process of the project
- Paintings/ drawings
Project Culmination:
- On the day of culmination, students presented the area of land in the school that they worked on to make it useable for the school community.
- The geologist/ subject specialist was invited to the culmination to comment on student learning process.
